Schnitzelburg

  • 2 oz bourbon
  • 1 oz amaro
  • 1/4 oz cherry liqueur
  • 1/4 oz bitters
  1. Stir all ingredients with ice
  2. Strain into highball
  3. Garnish with lemon zest

  • 1/4 oz cherry liqueur 
  • Angostura bitters 
  1. Stir with ice 
  2. Strain into chilled glass
  3. Garnish with orange zeset twist and (optionally) cherry

Hot Toddy

  • 2 oz bourbon
  • 1-2 barspoons honey
  • 1 oz lemon
  • (optional) orange bitters
  • (optional) 1 barspoon ginger syrup
  • 4 oz hot water

  1. Combine all ingredients except hot water in mug
  2. Pour hot water over other ingredients and mix to combine
  3. Garnish with cinnamon stick or lemon wheel

  • 2oz rye or bourbon
  • 1 oz orange liqueur 
  • ​1/2 oz sweet vermouth
  • 1/2 oz lemon juice
  1. Shake with ice
  2. Strain into highball 
  3. Garnish with brandied cherry or lemon zest peel

Mulled Cider

  • 1 gallon apple cider
  • 1 orange, halved
  • 20ish cloves
  • 2-4 star anise
  • 2-4 cinnamon sticks
  • 1-2 nutmeg
  • allspice berries
  • 1 chunk peeled ginger (optional)

  1. Stick cloves into rind of orange so they don't end up in your cup
  2. Combine all ingredients in saucepan
  3. Keep at a low simmer for at least an hour

Trader Joe's fall cider is my favorite (I don't care for the one they switch to in November.  For extra pretty cider, add some cranberries or pomegranate seeds.

Fall Sangria

  • 1-2 apples, sliced​
  • 1 pear, sliced
  • 1 orange, sliced
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • ​bourbon
  • apple cider
  • white wine
  • ginger beer or ale

  1. Place fruit and cinnamon sticks in pitcher
  2. Pour in bourbon, cider, wine, and stir
  3. Refrigerate
  4. Serve in glass with (optional) caramel cinnamon-sugar rim

Montenegro Variation

  • 3/4 oz orange amaro
  • 2 oz sparkling white wine
  • 1/2 oz elderberry gin liquor 
  1. Add amaro to glass
  2. Pour in wine
  3. Use spoon to float liquor on top

Peach Smash

  • 1 oz simple syrup (demara or ginger)
  • 1/2 peach, muddled, or 2 oz peach juice
  • 3-4 mint leave
  • 2 oz bourbon
  • ginger beer or seltzer water

  1. Muddle syrup, peaches, and mint in cocktail shaker
  2. Shake with bourbon and ice
  3. Strain into rocks glass filed with ice
  4. Top with ginger beer or seltzer water
  5. Garnish with mint sprigs and peach slice

Whiskey Cocktail - pg 78
​Jerry Thomas, How to Mix Drinks, or the Bon Vivant's Companion, 1882
  • 2 oz rye whiskey
  • 1/2 bar-spoon simple syrup
  • 2 dashes Angostura bitters
  1. Shake or stir with fine ice
  2. Strain into a squat stemmed glass
  3. Garnish with lemon peel

The Savoy Old Fashioned - pg 84
​Harry Craddock, published in The Savoy Cocktail Book, 1930, a collection of Prohibition era cocktails.
  • 2 oz rye or Canadian Club whiskey
  • 1 lump sugar or sugar cube
  • 2 dashes Angostura bitters
  • orange peel and lemon slice
  1. Crush sugar and bitters together in medium glass
  2. Add bourbon
  3. Add lump of ice and decorate with fruit
  4. Stir well to chill

Rye Old Fashioned - pg 88
  • 2 oz rye or bourbon
  • 1 sugar cube
  • 2 dashes Angostura bitter
  • barspoon warm water
  • orange twist
  1. Make in old fashioned glass
  2. Muddle sugar, bitters, & water
  3. Add rye or bourbon
  4. Stir in one large chunk of ice until chilled
  5. Twist orange zest and drop in

Scotch Old Fashioned - pg 91
I'll be honest I can't decide if I liked this one or not.  Recipe is the same as the rye version.
